Welcome to our community.

We invite you to join the conversation to help improve Patent Center.

Announcement
USPTO IdeaScale has moved to a more secure platform as of 4/18/21. There are some impacts to our IdeaScale participants:

  • Users will have to change their passwords on the new site when logging in for the first time.
  • This community now uses 2 factor authorization. When you login, you will be asked to enter a code that was emailed to you.
  • This eCommerce community will be at a new URL(https://uspto-emod.ideascalegov.com/), but a redirect will be in place for 6 months so that you have time to update your bookmarks.

Thanks for your understanding.

This eMod IdeaScale is designed to be a forum for public suggestions and discussions to drive the improvements to Patent Center and the electronic patent application process. As we continue to develop the Patent Center application filing and viewing system, we are looking to you for feedback so that we can better fit your needs

In this community, you can submit ideas, add comments to ideas, and vote for the ideas you think are the most important.

Although we will not respond to every idea, all ideas will be regularly reviewed and considered.

To ensure a productive discussion, those who elect to participate agree to post only ideas or comments directly related to Patent Center. Those who elect to participate agree to refrain from submitting ideas or comments that promote services or products (not including non-commercial links that are relevant to this Web site); and to refrain from including private phone numbers, email addresses, or postal addresses or embedding other media (not including hyperlinks to other media).

More information can be found at https://www.uspto.gov/patents-application-process/patent-center. If you have any questions for the eMod Team, please contact us at emod@uspto.gov.

We look forward to hearing your feedback!

PDF Preview Needs Work

In EFS, when you click on an uploaded document, it would bring it up in a separate window or tab of the default browser using whatever PDF plugin you had.  In Patent Center, it instead brings it up in a pop-up that overlays part of the submission webpage.  The old way was better for at least the following reasons:

a)  You can only bring up one document at a time in the new system, forcing the user to wait for each document... more »

RE: Online training sessions and Webex downloads

When people sign up for training sessions,  they are only informed about the need to download Webex For Meetings just before the meeting starts, at the same time they get the meeting link.

Then, it takes multiple attempts to download the app, and the meeting has already started!

It would be great if at the time they register for an online training class,  if you could send them an email advising them of the need... more »

Drawings trending idea

The DOCX website claims drawings can be filed via docx, however every time I have tried to file drawings at the end of a docx, they always get labeled as part of the abstract. The document processing should get worried if an abstract is more than 1 page anyway, but how do you get drawings recognized?

Often need to refresh after logging in trending idea

Often in response to a user properly logging in to Patent Center, Patent Center returns its home page in a non-logged-in state.  Each time that happens, it is then necessary for the user to refresh the page to force Patent Center to return its home page in a logged-in state.  It would be great if the developer could fix this glitch.  Thanks.

Permalinks to applications - should avoid returning blank screen trending idea

Patent Center conveniently uses a standard URL format for patent applications.  The URL structure is https://patentcenter.uspto.gov/#!/applications/XXXXXXXX, where XXXXXXXX is the application number.  That URL points to the application-data page of the specified application.  This permalink can be really useful.

Unfortunately, however, if a user attempts to use that link structure to access an application number for... more »

Dependent claim incorrectly identified as independent claim

I just submitted an application today with 3/20 independent/total claims; when uploaded, Patent Center flagged it as having 4/20 independent/total claims.  It then filled out the fees due according to this claim count.  The culprit was claim 3, which recited:

3. The apparatus of either claim 1, wherein the.... (substantive material omitted since not public; underlining was added for this post).

The claim had started... more »

IdeaScale should not always require 2-factor authentication trending idea

It would be great if IdeaScale could prompt the user to allow it to remember a user's personal computer or browser, to avoid the need to input 2-factor authentication every time IdeaScale is accessed.  Or better yet, don't timeout the user's login at all on a trusted computer.  As the IdeaScale system is a platform for all interested persons to share ideas, there is no need for heightened account security.

The 2-FA setting... more »
