Welcome to our community.
We invite you to join the conversation to help improve Patent Center.
USPTO IdeaScale has moved to a more secure platform as of 4/18/21. There are some impacts to our IdeaScale participants:
- Users will have to change their passwords on the new site when logging in for the first time.
- This community now uses 2 factor authorization. When you login, you will be asked to enter a code that was emailed to you.
- This eCommerce community will be at a new URL(https://uspto-emod.ideascalegov.com/), but a redirect will be in place for 6 months so that you have time to update your bookmarks.
Thanks for your understanding.
This eMod IdeaScale is designed to be a forum for public suggestions and discussions to drive the improvements to Patent Center and the electronic patent application process. As we continue to develop the Patent Center application filing and viewing system, we are looking to you for feedback so that we can better fit your needs
In this community, you can submit ideas, add comments to ideas, and vote for the ideas you think are the most important.
Although we will not respond to every idea, all ideas will be regularly reviewed and considered.
To ensure a productive discussion, those who elect to participate agree to post only ideas or comments directly related to Patent Center. Those who elect to participate agree to refrain from submitting ideas or comments that promote services or products (not including non-commercial links that are relevant to this Web site); and to refrain from including private phone numbers, email addresses, or postal addresses or embedding other media (not including hyperlinks to other media).

Not sure why there is a limitation here but it should really be done away with. My client management software has more than 12 characters. This certainly limits my ability to track my matters with any TM filings.

Sometimes the information for your application is missing at the top of the page, instead you see something like "| : "
Please fix this.
You get a filing receipt after filing that includes ONLY the payment not a listing of everything that is filed. The filing receipt should include both a listing of all filed documents as well as the fee paid to reduce the amount of printed paper needed.
The new Patent Center format needs more color contrast to assist with viewing. The colors right now are too bland for your eye to be able to distinguish sections. Some blocking and a little more color or darkening of existing colors would aid in viewing.
If there was an Entity Conversion button for recording patents. There is one for trademarks but not for patents in EFS-Web.
When filing a new application the information (title, inventor, type of application, file number) does not show up at the type of the screen until the very end. This isn't helpful as you can fix a typo or if you have accidentally picked the wrong type of application until you get to the very end and then you have to start the application all over.
Patent Center often presents a "SEARCH LIMIT REACHED" pop-up notice (in a red box at the top right corner of the screen) in response to a search for an application. This seems like a glitch that needs to be fixed. Refreshing the browser sometimes helps, but not always.
Provide an example documents with examples of best practices. For example I use the following fields to generate the paragraph numbering [SEQ paragraph \# "0000" \* MERGEFORMAT]. I think this formatting is being rejected by the USPTO. Our paralegal often removes stylesheets and field codes to in order to ensure that documents will be uploaded. Please provide example stylesheets that you know work.
First, I wanted to look at old bugs/requests. I recall looking at a LONG list of issues in summer or fall 2020. They're gone now.
Second, last week, the following conversation occurred on one of the email lists. A attorney (indicated "user 1" via '>') had made an error, and the PTO's software hadn't caught it. Then the PTO's humans were so attached to... more »
The DOCX format is not designed to provide the portability, uniformity, or interoperability that is essential to legal documents. As many letters to the PTO have explained (see, for example, https://www.uspto.gov/sites/default/files/documents/Comment_Seventy_Three_Patent_Practitioners_092719.pdf... more »
