In Patent Center, nomenclature "application" vs "submission" trending idea

The nomenclature throughout PatentCenter is wrong and therefore confusing. The words "application" and "submission" are used by humans with two very specific and consistent definitions. Patent Center goofs it up. To humans (especially lawyers):

* An "application" is the thing that starts with filing a new application, has a serial number of the form xx/xxx,xxx, and persists for some years through multiple office actions,... more »

Manage Customer Numbers trending idea

I don't understand why sponsored staff cannot add/remove attorneys/agents associated with the firm customer number.  You don't need to be an attorney/agent to have a customer number so why do you have to be one to remove/add them.  I am a Director and the fact that I have to ask those underneath me to make the changes because I'm not a registered attorney/agent is insulting.  The gentlemen I spoke with at the EBC said... more »

New Application Filing trending idea

When filing a new application the information (title, inventor, type of application, file number) does not show up at the type of the screen until the very end.  This isn't helpful as you can fix a typo or if you have accidentally picked the wrong type of application until you get to the very end and then you have to start the application all over.

"FILED BY" should be practitioner rather than sponsored person

On the Electronic Acknowledgement Receipt for filing any documents, Patent Center specifies in the FILED BY field the name of the person who uploaded the documents for filing. But where a practitioner's sponsored assistant uploads documents and the practitioner is the one who reviews and submits the uploaded documents, that field should specify the practitioner's name rather than the sponsored assistant's name, since... more »

Login Ineffective

We are finding more and more that there is a glitch that results in logins being ineffective, i.e., the login is not rejected, but Patent Center acts like it didn't happen. Specifically, the user is not shown the Workbench or any other non-public interfaces--even after they log in. It seems like it usually happens after a successful login and later logout--the non-public interfaces are shown for the initial log in, and... more »

Sign In Multiple Times

I sign into my USPTO.gov account, then click the Patent Drop Down and click on Patent Center. Once there, I do not have "Existing Submissions" available and when I look in the upper right, my name is not there. It still says Sign In. It seems that when you open patent center in a new tab, the sign in does not transfer.

Also the same when I open the link from the emailed receipt -- I can already be logged in and then... more »

App Search Disparity b/t Patent Center and Private PAIR

I endeavored to make the same application search inquiry on Patent Center and Private PAIR.  The search is routinely performed to check for recent status updates, including Office Actions which have been counted but not yet mailed.  Unfortunately, though the search inquiry entered was the same, the results yielded on both platforms were not.  The Private PAIR search return was clearly more thorough in that the results... more »

PatentCenter vs ePCT -- contrasting design philosophies

Two things happened in the last 48 hours that come together.

First, I wanted to look at old bugs/requests.  I recall looking at a LONG list of issues in summer or fall 2020.  They're gone now.

Second, last week, the following conversation occurred on one of the email lists.   A attorney (indicated "user 1" via '>') had made an error, and the PTO's software hadn't caught it. Then the PTO's humans were so attached to... more »

Behind the scene processing of drawings

What is the "processing" of drawings which goes on behind the scenes which results in portions missing or being blacked out? It doesn't seem to be identical to the "processing" which occurs when using EFSWeb, as the same drawings filed in both systems appear in the file wrapper differently. Whatever processing Patent Center uses seems to distort the drawings even worse than EFSWeb. Is there any process we can use pre-filing... more »
